Closing One Chapter, Opening Another: Reflections and Renewal

As the first signs of spring appear—crocuses and daffodils emerging in the garden—I find myself reflecting on a year that has tested my resilience and, ultimately, renewed my sense of purpose. The past twelve months have brought their share of challenges, but as I look ahead, I do so with genuine optimism and gratitude.

Weathering the Storms—Literally and Figuratively

This year was marked by unexpected hurdles, both personal and professional. On the home front, I faced the stress of a collapsing wall and a leaking roof—reminders that life’s foundations sometimes need urgent attention. Compounding this, my wife has been abroad in Bulgaria for over six months. While the solitude offered moments of quiet, the distance brought its own strain. Video calls are no substitute for having your partner by your side, and I look forward to her return with great anticipation.

Creative Highlights and Professional Growth

Despite these difficulties, there were moments of real pride and accomplishment. Westmoot was a particular highlight: seeing my logo featured on banners, badges, T-shirts, and even a commemorative coin was a rewarding affirmation of my work. Browsing through the event photos and spotting the logo in so many places was a genuine delight. (For those interested, the event gallery is available here.

Another milestone was launching my own website, a project that felt both daunting and exhilarating. Presenting it at the Celtic Arts Conference was a nerve-wracking experience, but it marked a significant step forward in sharing my work with a wider audience.

Artistically, this year was not without its struggles. After the high of having my design chosen for Westmoot, I experienced a creative lull that left me feeling adrift. I channeled my energy into skill development, which was often more challenging than expected. Still, I managed to complete several projects that pushed my boundaries and expanded my repertoire:

Artistic Projects: A Year of Exploration and Growth

• Celtic Jewellery Box: This project allowed me to explore intricate design and craftsmanship, blending traditional Celtic motifs with modern techniques. The process was both rewarding and educational, and the finished piece stands as a testament to perseverance and attention to detail.

• Pencil Portraits: I dedicated time to creating several pencil portraits, with my favourite being a study of my wife.

• Acrylic Paintings: Venturing into acrylics was a new challenge. While I’m still learning the nuances of this medium, each painting represented a step forward in my artistic journey. I’ve come to appreciate that mastery takes time, and I’m committed to continual improvement.

• Lunch Break Sketches: Even during the busiest days, I found moments to sketch. These quick pencil studies kept my skills sharp and provided a welcome creative escape.

• Personal Logo Design: I developed a new logo for my website, incorporating my initials—an ‘M’ above an insular ‘T’. This design reflects both my heritage and my evolving artistic identity. This is the basic structure which will be slightly elaborated on and refined before I use it.

• Geometric Art: Recently, I returned to geometric compositions, revisiting the mathematical foundations that have always fascinated me. These projects are ongoing, and I look forward to sharing more as they develop.

Some projects, like an ambitious six-foot scroll, have been set aside for now. The process has deepened my respect for the patience and dedication required in this craft, especially as I watched my wife tackle similar challenges with grace.

A Shift in Perspective

Perhaps the most significant change this year has been in my outlook. I am now more intentional about what I learn and why. For the first time, I am planning well in advance—specifically for an event in Birmingham in 2027. This forward-thinking approach is new to me, but it feels right. I am also quietly working on another project, details of which I look forward to sharing in due course.

Looking Ahead with Gratitude

As I close the chapter on a demanding year, I do so with a sense of relief and renewed hope. The support I have received from friends, family, and the wider community has been invaluable. Thank you for standing by me through the ups and downs. I am excited for what the coming year holds and look forward to sharing new work, new ideas, and new adventures with you all.
